This page allows you to apply for the Beginning Programming in Java
workshop to be held at Georgia Tech
in Atlanta. Teachers who attend the entire 4 days of the workshop will earn 3 PLUs.
This workshop is for teachers with some programming experience. If you do not have any programming
experience you must take the Computing in the Modern World workshop first.
For more information on this workshop please see
http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/610. In addition
to the summer workshop there will be short 1 to 2-day workshops throughout the school year to further assist the
teachers. In addition, Barbara Ericson, is available for classroom visits, questions, and other help.
We will cover the basics (variables, operators, syntax, methods, class, object, etc) by writing programs
to manipulate media (image, sound, movies, and text). The workshop will be using the programming
language Java and free software from CMU called Alice that can be used to create 3D movies and games.
You are not required to stay residential for this workshop. However, if you are from outside of the
Atlanta area (> 30 miles from Georgia Tech), and are a Georgia teacher, we will cover your
hotel, parking, and meals. This is possible becuase of a grant from the National Science Foundation.
Out of state teachers will need to cover their own hotel, parking, and
meals (except lunch). You will be staying at a local hotel
with 2 teachers per room unless you wish to pay for the additional cost of a private
room.
Please fill out the questions and click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page
when you are done. You must fill in your name, home address, and e-mail address!
We will notify you about
the status of your application within 2 weeks. Your principal must agree with your plan for your training
and when you will teach the Beginning Programming course (or some other computing course). Please download the Word document
which you can get from the Beginning Programming in Java workshop
Web page and fill it out and have it signed
by your principal. Fax the completed form to Felicia Auzla at 404 385-0965. Your application is not complete until we have this
form!
We do expect teachers who take this workshop to teach the Beginning Programming course a year or two and then take
the Intermediate Programming in Java workshop and teach that material for a year or two and then some of them will
go on to take the AP workshop and teach AP CS.
A maximum of 30 teachers can take this workshop. If you apply
and then become unable to attend please contact Felicia Auzla, fauzla@cc.gatech.edu, so that we can accept
another teacher.
