This page allows you to apply for the
Computing in the Modern World
workshop to be held at Georgia Tech
in Atlanta. Teachers who attend the entire 4 days of the workshop will earn 3 PLUs. Teachers who are teaching or who plan to teach any computing
class can take this workshop. It is intended to start preparing teachers to teach the programming
part of the new Computing in the Modern World course.
This workshop is designed for teachers with no or little experience in computer programming. It will introduce
basic concepts of computer programming using Scratch, Alice, and LEGO NXT robots. Scratch is free
software from MIT that allows kids to learn programming concepts while creating 2D animations and
games (see http://scratch.mit.edu). Alice is free software from CMU that allows you to teach
drag-and-drop programming by having students create 3D movies and games (see http://www.alice.org).
LEGO NXT robots can also be programmed in a drag-and-drop environment (see http://mindstorms.lego.com/).
This workshop will cover the basics of computer programming including variables, loops, conditionals, objects, and classes.
We will also learn computing concepts by using activities from CS Unplugged (see http://csunplugged.org). These activities teach about binary numbers, encoding, error detection, networking and more.
For more information on this workshop please see
http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/609.
In addition
to the summer workshop there will be short 1 to 2-day workshops throughout the school year to further assist the
teachers. In addition, Barbara Ericson, is available for classroom visits, questions, and other help.
You are not required to stay residential for this workshop. However, if you are from outside of the
Atlanta area (> 30 miles from Georgia Tech), and are a Georgia teacher, we will cover your
hotel, parking, and meals. This is possible becuase of a grant from the National Science Foundation.
Out of state teachers will need to cover their own hotel, parking, and
meals (except lunch). You will be staying at a local hotel
with 2 teachers per room unless you wish to pay for the additional cost of a private
room.
Please fill out the questions and click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page
when you are done. You must fill in your name, home address, and e-mail address!
We will notify you about
the status of your application within 2 weeks. Your principal must agree with your plan for your training
and when you will teach the Computing in the Modern World course (or some other computing course). Please download the Word document
which you can get from the Computing in the Modern World workshop
Web page and fill it out and have it signed
by your principal. Fax the completed form to Felicia Auzla at 404 385-0965. Your application is not complete until we have this
form!
A maximum of 30 teachers can take this workshop. If you apply
and then become unable to attend please contact Felicia Auzla, fauzla@cc.gatech.edu, so that we can accept
another teacher.
